Reputation: 88 | | IP Hiding VPN Access I noticed that there isn't really a comprehensive guide to a VPN on these forums, despite a few people asking for it. Search turned up a couple of half-hearted descriptions, but I hope this makes more sense. (Also, I'm still new, so I couldn't work out where to put this, so I went for the scams section. Mods plz move if I was wrong).
A VPN (Virtual Private Network) is similar to a web proxy, just better. Web proxies generally have limits on site access or javascript or cookies; a VPN just provides a secure "tunnel" from you to the server, hiding your IP. I'm not going into the details, since they're boring and irrelevant, but google it if you're actually interested.
For free VPNs - let's face it, if it's not free, it's not worth it! - I prefer Relakks. Some people have mentioned HotSpotShield, but I choose Relakks a long time ago for reasons that probably made sense at the time. EDIT: Relakks, however, have changed their business model and don't give you the free 30 days until you pay. So, we're using HotSpotShield!
Onto the explanation!
Download the HotSpotShield Software from here Code: http://anchorfree.com/downloads/hotspot-shield/
After installing it, you can create an account and use it to connect securely to the internet. The bonus of this, is that they are located in the USA, meaning you'll get a much lower latency. Because you're connecting with a different IP, you almost have a "get out of jail free" card if you get banned for scamming; contact Blizzard and explain that your account was hacked and you would like a restoration.
I've been told that HSS calculates your 3GB of monthly bandwidth based on your MAC address; something that you can change if you use a router.
Have fun!

Reputation: 88 | | | Sorry, i should have been clearer in the first post. Relakks is a pay-to-use VPN, but they offer you a free month when you sign up (without requiring credit card details). Sign up a new account every month, when your free time expires |

Reputation: 88 | | | Hnnng, aggravating, I'll actually test it then, rather than reading their business model lol
EDIT: If you just registered now, it may take some time for the account to activate. I can't see anywhere that they've removed the 30 day trial, and googling seems to confirm that.

You can daily change your ip yourself in this swift easy method.
If you are connected to a router, plug the cable into the modem instead at this time.
go to start
hit run
type in "cmd"
this will pull up a command prompt
type in ipconfig/release
this will disconnect your internet, next
find the D/C icon in your tray. looks like a disconnected computer.
click it
go to the general/details or w/e at the bottom part of your network.
scroll down the top to ip/tp or w/e and click it
enter your own ip then hit "tab" and enter 1212121212 until it fills up, hit ok
then hit ok again.
now go back, do it again but hit auto assign ip.
go to whatismyip.com and itll say the new ip you got
this entire proccess takes me 5 minutes. unless your ip isnt changable, this works.
everyone else going to say WELL IN THIS BLANK CASE IT DOESNT WORK BLABLAVLA just wanna get their postcount up and seem better then the poster, try my method first then judge. |

Not all ISP's will randomly give you a new IP just because you /release the old one.
I used to work for a cable company as an installer, and know just a little about how their systems work. When you sign up for their service, you are given an IP address that you CANNOT change, not without calling up and asking for a new one. And even then, you have to give a good reason.
Let's say that your ip is 173.29.166.20 (which is mine currently...I change it often so don't bother lol...)
What happens is when you are IP banned, they ban the ENTIRE IP only (i.e. 173.29.166.20). That's it. If your last octuplet changes to .21, then you are free to get back on and carry out your business.
Now, as a company, they can't range-ban the entire last octuplet (i.e. 166.20-166.29) because that would effectively ban other people who just happen to be on my same ISP network.
Now, onto important business.
My cable ISP assigns me that specific IP addy. I can't do a simple /release and /renew command, because that IP is mine, and noone elses. If I try that, I'll simply get my old one.
Now, if you're on DSL you should have no problem getting a new one.
My entire post is about if you can't. IF your IP stays the same, then you just have to call up your ISP and ask them to change the last octuplet because (and feel free to make up an excuse) something about a game you are trying to play has that banned because of another user. (remember, stay vague...)
Just a lil insight on IP's. Hope this helps. |
