This is indeed old, and doesn't always work... Sometimes, a person will simply whisper you and state that "it's on the AH for less" or something along those lines.

Works like a charm and it's been priceless to watch the reactions of people. I use it mostly with twink items for best profit. I shout with a fake banking char to buy the item for the ridiculous amount twink items can cost and to spice it up a bit i add to the shout for all the greedy crooks to p**s off because im paying max X gold for it. Then the poor bastard swallows the hook and i simply tell him to hold on for i have to log to the twink char because i dont want to wait for the mail delay from bank alt to twink char. After i just watch the priceless reactions i mentioned:
-"Who wanted to buy the [Feet of the lynx]???"
...silence...
-"Is here the person who wanted to buy [Feet of the lynx] /w me"
...silence...
-"Selling neat twink stuff [Feet of the lynx] ^^;"
