Due to how their builds of PTR work, their accounts database is outdated or simply not subjected to the same upkeep/security as the regular realms, which would make sense. (They might just not give a **** either)
Now its not tested by me, which is why its here in general CHAT. Im sure a couple of you sillys have had accounts banned, try them out and report back please.
Two of my dummy accounts are suspended so I dont really have room for getting one banned right now.
(Btw I searched the forums for "Play PTR for free" and checked the 5 pages returned. Null)

how do u try the PTR??? I cant even log in to see the realms and im perma banned so how do I access the PTR because i really wanna play again btw I live in england so do they have PTRs there or is it only in the US?

This does not work for all banned account. I had an account banned roughly 5 months ago and was not able to play.
I just ran the WoW launcher, logged in on the public test realm website (which teased me into believing it was going to work) and was able to copy a character to the test realm. However, when I tried to login on the same account using the test server program it said something about my account being closed and that I should visit some FAQ about banned accounts.
Here is a quote from the wow site that may explain how this is working

Well its like I thought. Their accounts database for PTR is copied from normal realms at a certain time, but then it takes ages for them to build the PTR and means you could get banned in that time it takes, and be banned instantly from normal realms.
But when the PTR comes up, it will be running an old database copied when you werent banned.
But still... its strange, some people who have been banned a long long time ago can work on the latest ones I believe. Then again, it might not be anything to do with the age of the database, but infact, they just copy accounts in such a way that none are banned.
BTW: If you are in the EU, you are gonna have trouble with the PTR anyway. Its severely bugged atm. The Eastern-Kingdoms has been down for days, causing any alliance chars to be sent back to char selection screen after picking one to log in with.
Kalimdor works but only for 5 minutes then the realm reverts and its all back to normal.
To the person who said they could copy chars:
Could you try accessing the accounts management page to see if your account still "exists" please.
Also, yes Americn, I would like if someone could PM me credentials to a banned USA account :P

[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]
Login if it works, select what premade chars you want and they will be copied over and waiting for you on the realm.
Also see the link to download the Test Realm files.
If you have a folder in your wow directory called "WOWTest"
Delete it, then download.

They both actually lead to the same domain I believe. Try it tho. Go the the EU website, then down to Test Realm, then to char copy.
Try the same then again on the USA to see.
Strange the website lets u login to copy chars and not play. You would expect their databases to be linked/shared and kept up-to-date either way
