Well as some of the older players may know when WoW has a unexpected long downtime or just a long down time on a realm they sometimes reward the players on that server with one free day.
Well as i discovered some time ago if you create a player on every realm or lots of realms and one goes down you get a free day because you have a character on the server. Even if you have never played it

I am sure they check for activity, like if you have more than a month inactivity on the realm then they won't give you a free day.. though you never know, but nice tip -worth trying out at least. :P
check for activity? 10,000,000 accounts. lets say everyone has 1 main and 2 alts and 2 banks and say 2 test chars of some class... that makes for 70,000,000 characters. now thats a rather standard amount... then consider that say 10% have maybe 25 characters spread out over their account... add 25,000,000 characters.
that adds up to 95,000,000 characters to check for activity. once per week... every week. this might very well be real.

Protip, make sure you have 1 character on each battle group. It seems that when they take down a group of servers, they take down a whole battle group.
Then after that, I would put characters on the higher popuatlion servers that came out after the first wave of servers, if you can find out. I think those servers have the oldest hardware, and thus, require more work, resulting in longer downtimes and a higher chance to get a free day.
So, to summarize, make characters on the following servers (if you don't care which ones) and you will have one on each battlegroup and greatly increase your chances of getting free time:
