If a friend of yours wins an otherwise worthless gem (like a warrior getting a +6 spell dmg, +5 hit) in a heroic, they can still make use of it. If you give them a nice BoE craft (e.g. spellstrike) they can gem it for you and give it back.

why even roll if you get it, but if somehow you're solo'ing and get a BoP gem, then why not just sell it on trade, offer to put it on A BoE, make some money in the long run.
