Yes, you are wrong. it works even if someone has it, i"m talking about atlasloot which can only link items you"ve seen.

Problem is.. if the item is already on the server, then you can link it.
So how is this supposed to work?

You can link items that the server has seen, from its own players or from others on the battle-group, or cast by a spell (like the Artifact Glaives).
I am not sure right now, but I can almost swear that I read a blue post saying something like "everytime a boss respawns, his loot table changes". Even if not, until the item drops you can't link it.
If you are that recent to this game, at least you should've started playing since Sunwell came out and know this by now, as you probably tried checking some bosses' loot and couldn't link or see it.
