It, sort of, in some ways, some how, implies that it's courteous for one to give someone the same Reputation back in turn.
Some n00bs could see this as something like "repping me back" would be perfectly acceptable.

I would find it strange though if the staff have never thought about this.. |

When I read it at first, all it meant to me was "If you rep this person for contributing, you might be lucky enough to get rep from others for contributing, too," but I can see how this can have a double meaning.
