K, so, the repost function is great, it caters to the lazy and simple minded, but it doesn't take into account the hundreds of deleted threads that were reposts of reposts.
The problem with deleting threads is this, the record is lost and so are the differences between the repost and the original post.
For example, Say I want to post that you can mount your DK flier on top of a mammoth. This is a repost, but I don't know this. I title my thread "cool mammoth trick for DKs". I get some thread titles that relate, but they don't look like what I'm wanting to say. (or maybe they do, I'm making this crap up as I go along)
Maybe I'm a smart user and hit search first for "mammoth Death knight" and nothing close appears. I happily think I'm the one who thought this stuff up.
So I post my retreaded repost of a repost, then it too gets deleted.
If the post had not been deleted, but instead was moved to a forum named "REPOSTS" it would still be searchable and would increase the chances that the poster will see the older post.
I would suggest keeping the repost forum viewable but locked, disallowing replies or new threads. Moderators would be instructed to not delete repost threads, but to always move them to this forum.

It would be much more of a hassle to enforce (should you post reposts of reposts also in the repost forum, so that every single repost is there?), it would clutter the site with a lot more threads than necessary, and overall, people should simply search as hard as they can before they post.
Yeah, I know that sometimes thread titles can differ drastically (even though you should really read the contents of all the threads you serach for as well) and it may be difficult to tell if something is a repost, reposts happen. Punishments for reposts are not severe. If you post one, and someone says it is a repost, and you can see that it is definitely a repost, then just kindly report your own thread and ask for a delete. |

Also it means, people would get to keep their post count increase even for a repost which they wouldn't if it was deleted xD |

Although, if for some absurd reason this got approved, at least make the forum invisible for users so that no one can see it, but the moderators can still move threads into there and the search indexing still indexes it. |

Which I would agree with, and if Apoc were here, he'd probably would say something about it being too much of a hassle and would make a big mess of how the forums work, which is probably true. He's a smart guy.

Seriously though, this would make a big mess of the forums. And this has already been suggested before. (I suggested it a while back, and there's a few other threads in this section suggesting it.)
If people can't follow the rules (which includes searching before posting), then there is no reason for their post to be kept. Plus, leaving all the reposts, would not only be a bad idea (since Google would have a shitfit), but it wouldn't stop people from reposting anyway, and would just turn into a 'junk-drawer' of sorts. |
