[Guide] DBC Editing Creatures - 10-18-2006

WARNING! This guide is outdated. I would delete it, but it does give you a general idea of how to work with the DBC files. Updated links as well.

ok, ive saw ALOT of people asking how to change something with 1 BLP to something with 2-3 BLPs. this guide is completely my guide, do not steal it and put it on another site. sorry for the lack of photos or anything, but i dont know how to take a SS of my desktop (not to mention im just too lazy .)
ok, here it is, step by step.
1. download the programs.

WoW Model View
[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

CSVed
[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

DBCUtil1
[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

MyWarCraftStudio 9.0
[Only registered and activated users can see links. ] (Tayo thnx for the link )

ok, after u have all those, we can begin.
2. start off by opening MWS (MyWarCraftStudio) and clicking file\Open MPQ Archive.

3. browse your computers files and get to the WoW Data folder, most likely found in program files, then select Patch-2.mpq and click open.

4. click the plus sign beside DBFilesClient, alot of files should show. click CreatureDisplayInfo.dbc

ok, one quick note here. to begin, we are going to simply switch a Snowshoe Rabbit, which is buyable from a vendor in Dun Morogh for 50s, (sorry horde, ur out of luck ) with Onyxia.

5. right click CreatureDisplayInfo.dbc, and select extract file to...
you can extract it anywhere, but i would suggest the desktop. (i would also suggest closing MWS now, for less lag.

6. open up DBCUtil1, which has DBCUtil.exe in it, and drag CreatureDisplayInfo.dbc onto the program itself. it should begin changing it. once it finishes, it should close itself, and there should be a brand new CreatureDisplayInfo.dbc.csv on your desktop

7. heres where WoWModelView comes in. open the folder with the file in it. then u should see npcs.csv, open that with notepad.

8. hold ctrl+F and a search box should come up, type in Snowshoe Rabbit, and press Find Next. it should instantly go to the name and highlight it. heres how it should look 7560,328,1,Snowshoe Rabbit
see the 328?, open notepad and copy that number down. thats the dbc number.

9. now go back up to the top and click the very top line, or somewhere near it. now do the same with ctrl+f, then type in Onyxia, and Find Next. same thing here. 10184,8570,10,Onyxia
copy that number down as well.

now for the kinda hard part.

10. close npcs.csv and go to CSVed, then open it. click File\Open...
and find CreatureDisplayInfo.dbc.csv, which should still be on ur desktop. click on it, and then select open.

11. drag the bar on the right side of the screen, to the vertical column 8570.
double click on that column, in which another box should come up.

12. open another notepad, then copy and paste this into it
column2.
column3.
column4.
column5.
column6.
column7.
column8.
column9.
column10.
column11.
column12.
column13.
that should give u a general idea of how its done. now double click on each column, going from 2-13, and right-click\copy, then paste it into its corresponding spots on the notepad.

13. the notepad file should look like this once u finish copy-pasting into the notepad
column2. 1551
column3. 0
column4. 0
column5. 1.79999995232
column6. 255
column7. DragonOnyxia1
column8. DragonOnyxia2
column9. DragonOnyxia3
column10. -1
column11. 0
column12. 0
column13.

14. now go to vertical column 328 in CSVed. double click the column again, and replace the things u find in the column with that from the notepad file. IMPORTANT DO NOT overwrite column 1, for this is the data it needs to find the mob itself, if u delete this, or overwrite it, u will have a white and blue box instead of a rabbit! , after u finish doing it, it should look EXACTLY like this.
column1. 328
column2. 1551
column3. 0
column4. 0
column5. 1.79999995232
column6. 255
column7. DragonOnyxia1
column8. DragonOnyxia2
column9. DragonOnyxia3
column10. -1
column11. 0
column12. 0
column13.
notice how i didnt change the 328, but DID erase every thing else that the rabbit had.

15. click Apply Changes down at the bottom of the second CSVed window, then click Ready

16. click file\Save, then close the program.

17. open the folder with DBCUtil.exe in it again, but this time, drag THE CSV file onto it. it should ask if u want to overwrite the files already there, press enter, and wait for it to finish

18. open MWS 9.0 again

19. this time, click Pack\create MPQ archive

20. name the file Patch-5, and it should automatically put the .mpq on the end of it. i would suggest creating the file on ur desktop to begin with.

21. click Pack\Add File to Archive...
then click the ... sign to the right of the text box that comes up. find the CreatureDisplayInfo.dbc file on ur desktop, then click it and click open.
the name of it should now be in the text box. go to the left of the name of the file, and type DBFilesClient\ with exact spelling and capitalization. it should now say this, DBFilesClient\CreatureDisplayInfo.dbc

22. there should now be a folder with that file in it. click pack again, and click Save and Close Archive.

23. exit MWS, then drag the newly made Patch-5.mpq from ur desktop into your WoW\Data Folder (u can feel free to delete CreatureDisplayInfo.dbc, CreatureDisplayInfo.dbc.csv, and CreatureDisplayInfo.dbc.bak from ur desktop now, if u would like.)

24. go into the game and summon ur pet, and there u go!

heres a SS

and heres the premade file
[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

please tell me if i did something wrong with this guide.
enjoy all!

I'm partially retired from model editing. I'll still answer questions if I know the answers to them when you send them to me in a PM, but otherwise, I'm done.

first off. hey all, first post

second of all, plus rep. great guide mate, really love it.

I just got one problem, when I open the files in CSVed and go to the Onyxia files in column 7, 8 and 9 I get these three digits, 15669,15683 and 15697. when I use these three digits at the white snowshoe and put it in my mpq I just the words #error# on the places where mob names should be. and when I type DragonOnyxia at those column it also screws up. any way I can solve this?

Thanks in advance.

Pictures would be nice, not exactly too clear on steps 7+ .. You don't mention using wowmodelviewer at all.

Re: Guide to DBC Editing-Creatures - 11-20-2006

WoWModelViewer has one wholly critical flaw:
For models that aren't used in game(regardless of if it exists), it becomes much harder to get the number. I haven't tried to get a work around on that though.

How would you use this in conjunction with models from TBC? or can you not?

Re: Guide to DBC Editing-Creatures - 11-23-2006

It'd be hard. You'd have to specify in the DBC files where to get certain textures. You would need to add in the files with the appropriate treepath and tell the files to go there to load it.

Good luck with that, then. I got files from BC alpha in another thread if you want to have models that will load with WoW.

Re: Guide to DBC Editing-Creatures - 11-23-2006

Was thanksgiving tonight, didn't have time, Snake, are you telling me my models from Burning Crusade Beta won't work with normal wow? Do I need the F&F models? That would explain why all the stuff I bring in from it tends to be invisible...
