How to download safer from Limewire! - 02-27-2008

This is my first guide so bare with me.
When ever you download from LimeWire, Kazaa, or some other program and been scared to get a virus? I mean none of them promise %100 safety and virus free files right? Well there are ways to download safer! I myself work with LimeWire so I will use the search functions from it for examples.
Music
Don't be to scared when downloading music as it's impossible to insert a virus into a single music file. Music files are in .mp3, .wma, .wav, or .m4a. formats. All four will run fine with Windows Media Player, Itunes or any other windows music player. I'm not sure about Mac/Apple computers, I am against all forms of apple save for the Ipod and Itunes.
Videos
Videos are the same, it's also impossible to get a virus into a video file. They are most likely going to be .wmv, .avi, or .mp4. There are other video extension files for videos .mpeg, .mpg, .divx, .ac3, and others usually requireing one codec or another to work.
Pictures

Well, theres not much of a varity of picture you will find using LimeWire. There usually some sort of porn, or hentai of Dbz and Sailor Moon going all out or something. So what ever picture your searching for, heres the file extensions you should see. Again it's impossible to get a virus or something into a pic file so as long as you stick with the right file extension you will be fine. .Bmp and .Jpeg are the only two I've ever seen, but I don't search for pictures anymore. (I got sites...)
Programs
Ok, almost every program on Limewire you find is a virus so I'd stick with torrents. But I have gotten a few things off Limewire. GTA: III, a few N64 roms, limewire pro. Anyways, how to find out if a program is a virus? Well first if the file is less then 1Mb. Like I just did a search on setup (I'll tell you about that in a second) and more then 100 files with the name setup the biggest being only 11MB in size. Also another way to tell if it's a virus infected program, if it's an .exe file named setup. I've done many tests and everytime I execute the file and install, boom virus. So it's better safe then sorry not to use any file that just says "setup" regardless of what it is. Now your asking how do I tell if it's safe? Well I still can't give you a %100 percent sure way because any file can be dressed up to be a program and have a virus inside hidden. But for example, I did a simple search on Grand Theft Auto and a few files came up. The first said grand theft auto. It was an Exe, and only 288KB in size. Another file came up, a .Zip file which was called GTA - VC Grand Theft Auto - Vice City and was 239 Mb in size. So I can guess which one is the virus and which one is more likely to be safe. I uploaded one of those setup files to VirusTotal and it came up with this. I laughed so hard when the page loaded.

So, now we know.
On a side note, ZIP files are the only truely %50 chance to be safe because that means theres possible a read me file inside which is will tell you how to install and play. If it's just another .Exe file named Setup, delete it.
Documents
No possible way to get a virus into a .txt file so I'm not going to bother. Beside not like anyone is going to search for one, seeing as how there almost all useless.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And that about sums it up for downloading safer, or not wasting a time on a download.
I hope this helps you, and though I doubt none of this isn't hard to know, it's helpful information because I see people always asking if LimeWire is safe, or Kazaa is safe.
The answer is no it's not. Theres always a chance. But thats why they invented virus protection. The pleasurable gaming you want. With the safety you need. V
Did you know that %75 of people game viruses from files when there was know signs of a virus outbreak? I'm not funny I know. Making fun of Herpes and the Trojan commercials FYI. Well, happy downloading.

Nice guide! But you are wrong on two things....
1. You CAN insert a Shell/trojan horse into a MP3 file... (Got one the other day :P)
2. You CAN insert a Shell into a JPG... (only when open locally... Not through website)
But these are very low chances (about 7% chance in limewire)

Yes I am still Pigpoo by heart. I WANT MY NAME BACK!
