title says it all, i have windows xp professional and was wondering if i shoudl upgrade to vista, there are many benifits and downers. Im goign to find a old hdd and test it using my pc. Id be gettin vista ultimate btw

Intel (R) Pentium D 5.60GHz
2.00 GB RAM
512mb ATI 1550 graphics
80gm hardrive 1st
160gb hardrive 2nd
20gb 3rd (thats the one i will test vista on)

I don't like vista. Just my opinion. Can't say much else. My brother has it and it has way to much security, you have to choose accept 3 times to run anything. And cheat engine has problems on vista :-(

No. I am not just a regular vista hater without reasons to back my argument so here goes some actual input,

first Pros of Vista:
DirectX10
desktop search
aero (if you want to lose 40% performance for a little transparency)
Shiny

Cons of Vista:
system resource hog
desktop search no longer unique, in XP patch
poor gaming performance
64 bit version still limited (as far as ram and flash)
still buggy


So for now my vote is to stay with XP until there are a lot more patches and updates to Vista and since Microsoft is taking a lot of the features and adding them to XP I am especially hesitant.

Further note: If you do go ahead and get Vista buy yourself 2 gigs more of ram for sure as vista will use 1 of them just for running the OS and mabey 1.5 with aero on other than that spec wise your system seems able to handle it at first glance though you never know for sure until you try to install whether the hardware will be compatible...

If you want to enjoy high-end gaming (thats not World of Warcraft), Vista is unfortunately the most viable option. With Vista, you'll get full DirectX 10 support and the OS can use more RAM, giving you a smoother performance (But for Vista to be smooth, you'll need alot of that). Zenocide said that vista had poor gaming performance - which is partially true, but only if you have an average system. NASA Powerstations will run games very smoothly.

I beta tested Vista back in the day - and I'd rather spit on the new games and use XP instead of Vista. Almost everything you try to do is somehow interrupted by popups and warnings about warnings, bubbles floating on your monitor and so much more. The interface is a pain to operate, from searching to system setup - it's a pain. You'll also find that less frequently updated applications and drivers are a pain to run on Vista.

But if you like a smooth interface, an application that tells you how the moon is going to look tonight and lots, lots lots of security - Vista is your thing.

It's true. I use Vista and Lag is right on the money >_<


And I wouldn't upgrade. Unless you're going to play games like Crysis, but your computer only has half a gig of ram anyways, and Vista uses up so much memory It'd only end up slowing your computer down and pissing you off. Stick with XP, or get a Vista skin for XP and "have both."

For the security:
you can deactivate nearly every security function, so they dont bother you. I has Windows Vista Ultimate, and it looks great! But it eats more RAM and some older games which worked on WinXP dont work in Vista... I would say, if you got a Game which Requires Vista then upgrade, if not, then dont.

ok first thing wrong with your arguement, i have outlined in red.

im going to say this. how is it worse when xp has direct x 9 and vista has 10? Hell i would like you to see a comparison of the two.

Another thing. The people who are getting vista for gaming are probably going to upgrade the ram and whatnot. Aslong as you only have the game running and probably vent or something. you should be fine. (if your one of those people who runs 2 games or more for gods knows what you might have to upgrade your ram)

Oh, and the 64-bit version is hard to come by where i live. if you get the 32 bit version. most of everything is compatible.
