Steam "The Client" is free. And there "Is" some free content including game demos, videos, and some indie games. However, you have to remember that the Steam client in only a "Host" for games, or a "Hub" if you will. So most of the good content needs to be purchased ie: Full version games. That being said, there is tons of ways to purchase games, you can have games "Gifted" to you, and Steam always has what they call a "Weekend deal" every weekend where they will host a specific game for a discount price, or sometimes a game package. For example I bought the ID Software pack a while back for I think 40 or 50$ .. This incuded Doom, Doom2, Doom3, Quake1, Quake2 +Expansions, Quake3, Hexen, The Wolfenstein series. and so forth. I also bought the Entire Prince of persia series for 40$ .. Pop1, Pop2, Pop3, and the Need cell shaded one. Also I am sure that last weekend was Fallout3 + Expansions for a really good price.
