Playing on private servers with linux - 07-14-2008

OK here is a guide for playing on a private server with a linux operating system.
(NOTE: Himachi Servers will work but not tested will update guide later)

What you will need.

Linux distribution ( I would recommend [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]video driver's highly supported)

Wine [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

Windows XP with World of Warcraft Installed(optional)
or original World of Warcraft install disks.

Private server client files

Step 1.
Obviously install linux distro, and make sure that video card drivers work.
Google for guides.

Now install wine
[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]
3. Configuring Wine
By running the winecfg command, we can choose which sound driver to use (OSS or ALSA), and also switch compatibility modes - just like XP and Vista have done for quite some time, WINE allows us to switch between different operating systems to allow for better compatibility with various programs.

Now that, thats done we can move on to the fun stuff.

(THIS PART IS FOR THE PEOPLE WITH WORLD OF WARCRAFT ON WINDOWS)
Ok so Fallow any of the guides to makeing your WOW work on a private servers in windows, including editing the realmlist. MAKE SURE THAT YOU CAN CONNECT

Now simply copy your world of warcraft directory into your wine drive C and fallow these instructions.

We need to setup the config.wtf file inside your WoW folder, by default it is located in the ~/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/World\ of\ Warcraft/ directory. If it doesn’t exist, login to the game once, and just exit right out. The game will create a default one for you.

We need to append a few items to this file to use the OpenGL rendering engine (instead of DirectX or Software rendering) and make sure we have everything setup to run properly under WINE.

You can run this command to edit the file:
gedit ~/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/World\ of\ Warcraft/wtf/Config.wtf

Then paste these lines at the end:

SET gxApi "opengl"
SET ffxDeath "0"
SET ffxGlow "0"
SET SoundOutputSystem "1"
SET SoundBufferSize "150"

Then run the game and thats it.

NOW for the people who dont have windows xp or are just new to linux.

Installing WoW

Original WoW

The best method, if you have access to the installation discs is to copy the contents to your hard disk and run them from there:

* Create a convenient directory ( 'wow_install' on your Desktop for example)
* Copy all of the files from the first WoW CD to this new directory.
*

For each of the remaining WoW CD's, copy just the 'Installer Tome #.mpq' files. In the end, you should have the 'DirectX' directory, and the 'autorun.inf', 'installer.ico', 'Installer Tome.mpq', and 'Installer.exe' files from disc 1, and 'Installer Tome 2.mpq', 'Installer Tome 3.mpq', 'Installer Tome 4.mpq', and 'Installer Tome 5.mpq' from the remaining discs. Note that the 'Installer.exe' file on the first disc is different from the files of the same name on the subsequent discs; if you get the wrong one the install will fail with

Unrecognized key "options". (AttributeParser::Parse)

* Note that on some WoW DVD's the installer executable is hidden and you need to mount the disc with the 'unhide' option. To do this type in a terminal:

sudo mount -t iso9660 -o ro,unhide /dev/cdrom /media/cdrom0/

* Start the installation by opening a terminal and running these commands:

cd /<path-to-directory>/
wine Installer.exe

Replace <path-to-directory/> with the right path to the directory where you copied all the files above.

Some dialogs during installation may appear blank or garbled, and the installer may even hang for up to 5 minutes at 100% CPU, while appearing to be doing nothing. Simply wait and click next when possible.

(FROM [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] )

NOW MANUALLY RUN PATCHES THROUGH WINE( AND FALLOW GUIDES TO MAKING WOW WORK ON PRIVATE SERVERS)

This is a "Playing on private servers in linux" guide but you've to search the private server part yourself? You might want to add that you need to edit realmlist.wtf. But now this is just a regular wow on linux guide, surprisingly similar to [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] (everything in same order?). No i'm saying you've copied it but....
And there's a hamachi client for linux/ubuntu so there that is possible either

Actually if you notice I give credit to all the sources, and this guide does fallow alot of the same things as the normal wow install because private servers are getting better which requires alot less work to get it to work on linux.

I just wanted to Put a guide together and post it up here so that people interested could just come here and fallow the guide, plus there wasnt a linux guide up.
