What ?!
A company called Worlds.com has taken the first step to what could be a large series of legal battles.The company is represented by a law firm called Lerner David Littenberg Krumholz & Mentlik LLP. They have filed a complaint against the company NCSoft ( The creators of City of Heroes , Villains , Lineage , Tabula Rasa and others). The complaint claims that NCsoft broke their patent called "System and Method for Enabling Users to Interact in a Virtual Space.
Worls.com wants to damage NCsoft and wants to stop it from violating another patent called "scalable virtual world chat client server system". NCsoft has yet to respond.
What is worlds.com ?
Worlds.com, was one of the early virtual world developers from the '90s, They've announced earlier this month that it had selected an intellectual property firm to defend its two patents related to scaling virtual spaces and enabling users to interact and chat in 3D area's.
But there's more !
According to Worlds.com, the patents may also seek action against the likes of Blizzard (World of Warcraft) and Linden Research (Second Life) but for now, there's no such complaint.....yet
Will the company actually sue Blizzard or will they fail ?

I doubt they will win against Blizzard (if they try). In fact, I doubt they will win against NCsoft. In fact, if you look at worlds.com, they aim towards a social simulation, almost like chat rooms but super interactive and w/ 3d graphics.
NCsoft and Blizzard are quite different. They make games in which a bunch of people connect via internet and quest or play or w/e, not chat and emote and that such (yes, I know that is supported to an extent, but WoW and Tabula Rasa and that such weren't designed around it.)
Not only that, but I think the patent in itself is a joke. To claim such a general concept is simply stupid. Its like saying "we made this shade of green, and thus we have the rights to all things this shade of green."
Again, I think this whole thing is a joke.
On an unrelated topic, I found a news story on the front page of worlds.com. The story included this: Quote: |
